Out of Africa Gallery | HOMAGE TO MARION BOEHM: Collage as a mirror of identities

Out Of Africa Gallery presents HOMAGE TO MARION BOEHM: Collage as a mirror of identities by Marion Boehm.

OOA Gallery, in collaboration with the Contemporary African Art department of Artcurial, will exhibit 18 portraits by Marion Boehm from February 27 to March 5, 2024. The exhibition showcases her latest works from 2023, highlighting her artistic journey through themes of nomadism, femininity, and the diversity of African identities.

Marion Boehm, a German mixed-media artist born in 1964 in Duisburg-Rheinhausen, has explored various cultures through her nomadic life, including a significant period in South Africa. Her work, influenced by her experiences in South African townships and mentoring by artist Kay Hassan, reflects a deep commitment to cultural exchange and the essence of humanity.

In Johannesburg, Boehm was inspired by the community and resilience of Kliptown, where she developed her unique artistic style. Initially working with mixed-media collages, she evolved to include fabric and found objects, creating elaborate portraits that convey the dignity and grace of African women. Through her "Silent Beauty" series, Boehm challenges traditional notions of beauty, emphasizing inner strength and authenticity.

Boehm’s art transcends time, combining historical and contemporary elements to challenge skewed representations and celebrate her subjects with nobility. She engages in a cross-cultural dialogue that addresses globalization, the impact of Chinese investment in Africa, and the resulting cultural exchanges. Her work also explores economic and cultural nomadism, reflecting on the interconnectedness of global communities.

Her series "Inspiring" pays tribute to influential African and diaspora artists, highlighting the power of art to address socio-economic issues. Boehm's studio, filled with vibrant fabrics and life-size collages, offers a multi-sensory experience that reflects her commitment to creating new connections through art.

Collaborating with Lebanese photographer Roger Moukarzel, her recent works incorporate photographs exploring oriental beauty, further enriching her artistic exploration.

Boehm’s art fosters unity and understanding across cultures, documenting the authenticity of communities, challenging historical narratives, and celebrating the strength of African women. Her work is a dialogue about diversity, urging viewers to reconsider their perceptions and embrace a more inclusive view of humanity. Her international recognition and exhibitions across various countries underline the global relevance of her artistic vision.

The show runs from 27 February - 5 March 2024.
